Butt and Pass

Butt and pass is a well known method for building log houses that consists of joining the logs that form the walls of the log cabin at a 90 degree corner in an alternating fashion. Specificallly, every other log passes over the other. This back-and-forth building style results in a corner that is extremely sturdy, supplying ample structural integrity to both walls that make up the 90 degree corner. Butt and pass is a very popular method of building log homes and you will find them in log home kits as well.

There several other methods of building your corners other than butt and pass, those include dove tail, and a few others that I could not locate online to tell you about. I will be researching this topic more in the future, so I will report back as I get that info. There are a bunch of websites devoted to information on log cabin construction that I am sure will help us figure out these mysteries as we learn more. For now, enjoy your log house and lite a warm fire in the fireplace (if it is winter).
