Moving Storage Methods

During the process of moving, storage is a helpful resource. Storage is usually a component in the process, regardless if you pay for someone else to move you or do the whole thing yourself. Moving storage and I are good friends, as I cannot count how many times I have moved. My moves have been everything from chaotic and inexpensive, to organized and very expensive. I feel like there are more ways to meet your moving storage needs than there were when I was a neophyte. Perhaps all those moves made me open my eyes to some easier ways to get it done.

In my 20s, I did moving the cheap way. It usually consisted of bribing some buddies with beer and pizza, convincing my parents to do some heavy lifting and using a flatbed truck of one of my friends. I seemed to always keep one of those storage rental places to keep all the stuff I did not know what to do with from move to move. I moved on to leasing a big moving truck at some point. I had to, of course, still bribe friends and family to lend their muscles. Surprisingly, the most daunting piece of that method was getting up enough courage to drive the truck from point A to point B. I cannot believe they let just anyone drive those things. They should really post bright yellow "student driver" stickers and "please give me one hundred feet of wiggle room" warning signs all over those trucks.

As I got older and more established in my career, my company paid for my moves. Now that was the way to go. The movers packed up everything, loaded it in the truck, drove the truck and unloaded everything. All I did was buy them some pizza (you see a trend with moving and pizza.) The downside to hiring professionals to pack and move you is that you have no control. When I unpacked boxes, there was a ton of extra paper wrapped around things that did not need to be wrapped (like shoes and clothing). They packed up the house like they were a vacuum cleaner just sweeping up anything in their path. The whole shipment was in storage, while we waited to move into the new house. We had no idea what was in there.

We are embarking on yet another moving storage journey. We are moving to a new city in a few months. We have children and appliances and adult things now. We are way beyond the renting a truck and bribing friends method. We also are pickier than we used to be. We think we will do a hybrid move. We will do a fair amount of packing for the things we care about most. We rented a moving storage box to put some of the things we do not need until the rest of the house is finished. The moving storage company will drop it off, we pack it at our leisure, and they pick it up and move it to a storage warehouse in our new city. The rest of our stuff will be packed up and moved by a professional moving company. We will have the moving storage company deliver the container from storage, once the second floor is ready on the house. We are not looking forward to, yet another, move. At least we are now experienced movers and can come up with a moving storage plan that suits our needs.
